How many of us actually read social media terms of use?
When you tweet you:

  • grant Twitter a licence to use, copy, reproduce, process, adapt, modify, publish, transmit, display and distribute content in any manner or method. Twitter may sublicense these rights to third parties without restriction.
  • allow Twitter and any third party to share your content with the rest of the world.
  • agree that Twitter and third party sites can use your content (including information about you shared by other users) to provide you with targeted advertising.
  • always remain liable and responsible for any consequences.

When you use Facebook:

  • you give Facebook a licence to use any intellectual property rights in content shared. Facebook may transfer or sublicense these rights to any third party without restriction.
  • if you share content with a ‘public’ setting, that content can be associated with your name and profile photo and could be used in Facebook advertisements and could appear in public search engine results. Public information includes information publicly shared by other users about you.
  • the following information will be recorded and tracked:
    • what others say about you.
    • which profiles you are viewing.
    • what you click on.
    • when you visit games or third party apps.
    • your IP address and GPS location.
    • information received about you from its affiliates (advertising partners) regarding your behavior on sites outside of Facebook.

When you use LinkedIn:

  • you grant LinkedIn a perpetual right to copy, prepare derivative works of, improve, distribute, publish, remove, retain, add, process, analyse, use and commercialize content in any way. LinkedIn may assign or sublicense these rights to any third party without restriction.
  • you allow other members to see your information and ideas. LinkedIn warns users not to post any ideas or confidential information that you do not want other members to make use of.
  • the following information will be recorded and tracked:
    • when you are online.
    • which profiles you have visited.
    • what you click on.
    • your logs and IP address.
    • when you use third party apps.
